Kreatopita is a savory Greek meat pie featuring layers of crisp phyllo dough filled with seasoned ground beef and rice, creating a hearty dish rich in tradition.

Ingredients

Ground Beef Mixture:

  • 500g ground beef
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup uncooked rice
  • 1/2 cup tomato sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tsp oregano

Phyllo Dough Layers:

  • 10 phyllo sheets
  • 1/2 cup melted butter or olive oil

Instructions

  1. Sauté onion: In a pan with oil, sauté the finely chopped onion. Add the ground beef and cook until browned.
  2. Add rice and seasonings: Stir in the rice, tomato sauce, oregano, salt, and pepper. Add a splash of water and simmer for 10 minutes.
  3. Layer phyllo sheets: Place 5 phyllo sheets in a greased baking dish, brushing each with melted butter or olive oil.
  4. Add meat filling: Spread the meat mixture evenly over the phyllo sheets in the dish.
  5. Add remaining phyllo sheets: Top the meat with the remaining 5 phyllo sheets, again brushing each with butter or oil.
  6. Bake: Bake the kreatopita at 180°C (350°F) for 40–45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown.
  7. Cool and slice: Allow the kreatopita to cool slightly before slicing and serving.
