Ingredients

Meat and Vegetables

  • 1 lb ground turkey
  • ⅓ cup green bell pepper, seeded and diced
  • ½ cup yellow onion, diced
  • 1 tsp garlic, minced
  • Hamburger buns (for serving)

Sauce

  • 8 oz tomato sauce
  • ¾ cup ketchup
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1½ tbsp yellow mustard
  • ¼ tsp chili powder
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp ground black pepper
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp onion powder
  • ½ tsp paprika

Instructions

  1. Brown the Turkey: In a large skillet over medium-high heat, add the ground turkey. Cook for 6-8 minutes until browned, breaking up the meat with a spatula as it cooks to ensure even browning.
  2. Sauté Vegetables: Add the diced onions, green bell peppers, and minced garlic to the skillet with the browned turkey. Cook for an additional 4-5 minutes until the vegetables are soft and fragrant.
  3. Drain Excess Grease: Carefully drain any excess grease from the skillet to keep the dish lean and healthy.
  4. Add Sauce Ingredients: Pour in the tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, yellow mustard, chili powder, Worcestershire sauce, ground black pepper, salt, onion powder, and paprika. Stir well to combine all ingredients evenly.
  5. Simmer to Thicken: Allow the mixture to simmer uncovered for 6-8 minutes. Stir occasionally until the sauce thickens to your desired consistency.
  6. Serve: Spoon the turkey sloppy joe mixture onto hamburger buns or your preferred bread option. Serve hot and enjoy!

Notes

  • Hamburger buns are not included in the nutritional calculations.
  • For a healthier serving, try whole wheat buns or lettuce wraps instead of traditional hamburger buns.
  • For a lower-carb option, serve the sloppy joe mixture over a bed of cooked rice or quinoa.
  • Pair this dish with sides like a fresh green salad, roasted vegetables, or sweet potato fries for a balanced meal.
