Ingredients

Crust

  • 2 cups Flour
  • 2 teaspoons Sugar
  • ¾ teaspoon Salt
  • ½ teaspoon Cinnamon
  • ⅔ cup Canola oil
  • 3 tablespoons Milk

Apple Filling

  • 4 cups Apples, peeled, cored and sliced
  • ⅔ cup Sugar
  • 3 tablespoons Flour
  • Dash of Lemon juice
  • Dash of Salt
  • 2 teaspoons Cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400℉ to ensure it’s hot and ready when your pie is prepared.
  2. Prepare Pie Plate and Dry Ingredients: Spray your pie plate evenly with cooking spray. In the pie plate, combine 2 cups flour, 2 teaspoons sugar, ½ teaspoon cinnamon, and ¾ teaspoon salt. Stir the mixture with a fork until well blended.
  3. Add Wet Ingredients: In a small bowl, mix ⅔ cup canola oil and 3 tablespoons milk. Pour this liquid over the dry ingredients in the pie plate. Stir to combine thoroughly, reserving about ⅓ of the dough for the crumb topping later.
  4. Form Crust: Press the remaining dough evenly into the bottom and up the sides of the pie plate to form the crust.
  5. Prepare Apple Filling: Place 4 cups peeled, cored, and sliced apples and ⅔ cup sugar into a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on high for 2 minutes to soften the apples.
  6. Thicken Filling: Add 3 tablespoons flour to the microwaved apples and continue microwaving on high for another 2 minutes to thicken the mixture.
  7. Season Filling: Stir in a dash of lemon juice, a dash of salt, and 2 teaspoons cinnamon to the apple mixture for flavor balance.
  8. Assemble Pie: Pour the apple filling into the prepared crust in the pie plate. Evenly scatter the reserved ⅓ dough over the top to form a crumb topping.
  9. Bake: Place the pie in the preheated oven and bake for 30 minutes or until the crust and topping are golden brown and the filling is bubbling.

Notes

  • Pie Shield: Use a pie shield to prevent the crust edges from burning while baking.
  • Shortcut Tip: Frozen apples can be used without peeling to save time.
  • Topping: Sprinkle a little extra sugar on the crumb topping for added sweetness and crunch.
  • Pie Crust Alternatives: Feel free to use a homemade pie crust if preferred instead of the oil-based crust.
  • Additional Mix-Ins: Add nuts or dried cranberries to the filling for extra texture and flavor.
  • Low Sugar Option: Substitute sugar with alternatives like Splenda to reduce sugar content.
  • Use a baking sheet under your pie dish to catch any overflow and make handling easier.
