These Doubletree Chocolate Chip Cookies are a delicious replica of the famous hotel cookie, featuring a blend of oats, semi-sweet chocolate chips, and chopped walnuts. The dough is chilled for at least 4 hours to develop rich flavors and a perfect chewy texture. Slightly underbaking ensures a soft center surrounded by lightly golden edges, making these cookies irresistible.

Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • ½ cup old fashioned oats
  • 2 ¼ cups (279g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 cup (226g) unsalted butter, melted
  • ¾ cup (150g) brown sugar, packed
  • ¾ cup (150g) granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon lemon juice
  • 2 large eggs

Add-ins

  • 3 cups (510g) semi-sweet chocolate chips (use your favorite kind)
  • 1 ½ cups chopped walnuts

Instructions

  1. Grind Oats and Mix Dry Ingredients: Place the oats in a small food processor or blender and grind until they turn into a powdery texture. Transfer to a medium bowl and whisk in the all-purpose flour, baking soda, salt, and ground cinnamon. Set this dry mixture aside.
  2. Combine Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, stir together the melted butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar until smooth. You may stir by hand or use a stand mixer. Add in the vanilla extract, lemon juice, and eggs, mixing on low speed until the mixture is smooth.
  3. Incorporate Dry Ingredients and Add-ins: Slowly stir the flour and oat mixture into the wet mixture. Expect the dough to be slightly lumpy due to ground oats. Gently fold in the semi-sweet chocolate chips and chopped walnuts evenly throughout the dough.
  4. Prepare for Chilling: Line a cookie sheet with wax paper, parchment paper, or a silicone baking mat. Using a ¼-cup measure, portion the cookie dough onto the sheet without needing to space them out. Cover the sheet tightly with plastic wrap and chill the dough for at least 4 hours or overnight to let flavors develop.
  5. Preheat Oven and Shape Cookies: Heat the oven to 350°F (177°C). Remove chilled dough portions and space them well on cookie sheets lined with parchment or silicone mats. Slightly press each dough ball down with the palm of your hand to gently flatten.
  6. Bake Cookies: Bake for 13-17 minutes, checking carefully to avoid overbaking. Cookies are done when the edges are light golden brown and the centers are no longer glossy but remain slightly soft. Remove from oven and allow to cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • Chilling the dough for at least 4 hours is essential for flavor development and texture.
  • Do not overbake; the cookies are best slightly underdone for a chewy center.
  • You can use your favorite brand of semi-sweet chocolate chips or even a mix of chocolate chunks for variety.
  • Pressing down the cookie dough before baking promotes even spreading and uniform thickness.
  • Store cookies in an airtight container to keep them fresh for up to a week.
