Ingredients

Spice Mix

  • 1 ½ teaspoons smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano or mixed herbs
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper

Potatoes

  • 23 medium potatoes
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (for potatoes)

Beef Mixture

  • 500 grams lean beef mince/ground beef
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (for cooking beef)
  • Remaining half of the prepared spice mix

Burger Bowl Toppings

  • Lettuce (shredded)
  • Cheese (dairy-free or regular, quantity as preferred)
  • Pickle slices (quantity as preferred)

Burger Sauce

  • 4 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon mustard (Dijon or yellow)
  • 1 teaspoon pickle juice (from the jar of pickles)
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika

Instructions

  1. Prepare the spice mix: In a small bowl, combine smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, dried oregano or mixed herbs, salt, and black pepper. Set this spice mix aside for use with potatoes and beef.
  2. Prepare the potatoes: Wash and cut the potatoes into chip-like strips. Pat them dry thoroughly using paper towels to remove excess moisture. Place the potato chips into a large mixing bowl, drizzle with 1 tablespoon of olive oil, then sprinkle half of the prepared spice mix over them. Toss well to coat all pieces evenly.
  3. Cook the potatoes: Spread the spiced potatoes on a baking tray in a single layer. Bake in a preheated oven at 200°C (390°F) for 30 to 40 minutes, flipping halfway through for crispness. Alternatively, cook in an air fryer at 200°C for about 20 minutes until golden and crispy.
  4. Cook the beef mince: While potatoes bake, heat the remaining 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a frying pan over high heat. Add the ground beef, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon. Once browned, sprinkle the remaining half of the spice mix over the meat. Continue cooking until the beef is darkened and all excess moisture has evaporated, ensuring it’s well browned and flavorful.
  5. Make the burger sauce: In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, pickle juice, garlic powder, and smoked paprika. Stir thoroughly and taste. Adjust seasoning as needed to balance the flavors.
  6. Assemble the burger bowls: Once the potatoes are cooked, divide them evenly among four bowls. Add a generous layer of shredded lettuce alongside the potatoes. Top with the cooked spiced beef mince, cheese slices, and pickle slices. Drizzle the burger sauce over the assembled bowls just before serving.

Notes

  • You can substitute ground beef with ground turkey or plant-based mince for a lighter or vegetarian option.
  • If you prefer crispier potatoes, soak cut potato chips in cold water for 30 minutes before drying to remove excess starch.
  • The burger sauce can be made ahead and stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • Adjust seasoning in both the spice mix and sauce according to your taste preference.
  • For gluten-free version, ensure ketchup and mayonnaise brands used do not contain gluten additives.
